What you'll find in this article
Being present online is now essential. But how to do it the right way? Often people start with the idea of having a website built, only to discover – during the first consultation with the web designer – that there are many options: showcase website, e-commerce, portal, landing page… And when they ask you “what type of site do you need?” or “what is your goal for it,” it’s easy to get overwhelmed.
Now, here, No Digital Brain wants clarity. Of course, we won’t talk about all the types of websites in this article; but starting from the showcase website, which is the most common form (and often the first choice for beginners), we will try to understand together if it is truly the right solution for your business — or if it risks being a bit too limited for you.
But let’s start from the beginning.
What is a showcase website?
A showcase website is, as the name suggests, a virtual storefront. An online space – in short – through which to display yourself and make yourself known. For companies, it is a huge opportunity to present services, products, and even values. Because yes, we are still talking about a showcase, but a showcase that can be “visited” by hundreds of thousands of people every day. That is, more or less, all those who use search engines and need a service or product like the ones you offer. Be careful, though: the showcase website is NOT designed to sell your products or services directly; therefore it should not be confused with e-commerce. The showcase is in fact only a display space, like many we see in the physical places we visit, for example in our cities. So it doesn’t have a cart, it doesn’t have a payment system, etc.: it only shows what you do. And it helps you reach the audience that interests you most. This doesn’t mean it isn’t useful for selling. On the contrary! The showcase website, as a digital system, provides you with many tools to refine your sales strategies. Through the site, in fact, you can collect data on visitors (with consent, obviously) and use it to create targeted advertising campaigns. Or you can simply obtain an email address (or phone number) via a form to fill out, so you can remain in contact with your visitors over time, for as long as they wish. Consider – among other things – that to do all this, a single web page is often sufficient. At that point, you would have a one-page site that contains, however, all the essential information: the company history, the list of services or products, a contact form and so on. This is also why the showcase website remains the simplest and fastest solution for those who want to be online – always with a polished and professional image – but without overcomplicating their lives.When a showcase website might be enough
Obviously, the showcase website is not for everyone. But, in our experience, we can confirm that it certainly represents one of the most versatile solutions. After all, it works for:- business consultants
- freelancers
- small businesses
- non-profit organizations
- agencies and institutions
-
- you want to present your business online professionally, without direct sales functions
- you need a digital point of reference where those searching for you on Google or social media can land
- you work by appointment or contact (such as consultants, professional firms, artisans, small businesses);
- you offer personalized or tailor-made services, so the sale happens after direct contact;
- you want to test the market or start building your digital reputation before investing in an e-commerce site;
- you don’t yet have a budget or a team ready to manage a more complex website.
When a showcase website is NOT enough
The showcase website is an excellent starting point, certainly. But – let’s face it – there are cases where it risks making you lose opportunities. There are businesses that, by nature or objectives, need a more dynamic website – capable not only of showing what you do but also of selling products or managing processes. So, if your company needs to:- sell products or services online with an integrated payment system;
- manage bookings, orders, or even registrations independently;
- publish content frequently (e.g., a company blog, an industry magazine, or even more simply news and updates);
- automate internal processes or offer restricted areas for customers and collaborators (like our Client Area)
- build advanced marketing strategies based on lead generation or sales funnels;
5 myths about showcase websites
Now, we know well that many clichés still – unfortunately – circulate around showcase websites. False myths, in short, that make the choice even harder for those who know little about digital and the internet. And we’re not just talking about a certain confusion between showcase websites and e-commerce. We’re talking about beliefs that easily translate into promises that are hard to keep and ruin relationships between clients and web designers. Let’s look at five that are worth clearing up once and for all.1. “A showcase website is only for being seen.”
Yes and no. A showcase website won’t be used for selling. However, there are many things you can do with it besides displaying products and services. For example, you can:- “collect” email addresses via a form
- receive quote requests directly
- direct visitors to your social channels
- monitor visits and get to know your audience
- etc.
2. “It doesn’t bring concrete results.”
In reality, if the showcase website is well-conceived and – above all – if it is optimized for search engines (have you ever heard of SEO?), it can bring quote requests, qualified leads, and even new collaborations. The fact that it doesn’t generate direct sales doesn’t mean it can’t trigger real opportunities. So don’t be afraid to invest time and money in it.3. “It’s a second-rate website.”
Quite the opposite. Don’t make the mistake of seeing the showcase website as a “reduced” version of e-commerce, because it isn’t. It is simply a different format with different goals. Do you need visibility, to build authority and trust? The showcase website is perfect. In fact, it’s often from there that a successful digital strategy starts. One that you can sustain in the long term.4. “There’s no need to update it.”
A common mistake, but don’t be fooled. Even a showcase website must be cared for and kept alive. How? With texts, images, references, and contacts that must always stay updated. Even a restyling of the showcase website can make sense if you’ve had one for a long time. A site frozen in time conveys the opposite of professionalism. Dedicate time (and resources) to it, and you’ll see it will bring the results you’re looking for.5. “With social media, a showcase website is useless.”
False. Very false. It’s true, social media helps you get known; but the content you publish on a platform like Facebook, Instagram, or similar is never entirely yours. Any update (e.g., to policy) can make it disappear. While a website remains your digital space; it is practically your home. A place online that is truly yours, where you tell your business story as you please and without depending on algorithms.Do you really need it? Here is a checklist!
Haven’t decided yet whether to invest in a showcase website? Then answer these questions. They will help you understand if a showcase website is truly the right choice for you.
