And they usually do it quite dramatically, so you’ll end up doing the same.

“A WordPress template? Heaven forbid! To have an original site, you have to work with code.” Work with code, exactly. But is that really the case?

Here at No Digital Brain (our agency), we have many developers on the team. And that’s exactly why today we want to debunk a myth that—honestly—should have been put to rest a long time ago.

Because a predefined WordPress template and a custom site (meaning one built, indeed, by working directly on the code) are two extremes and, as such, also allow for intermediate choices. Which, by the way, are almost always preferable.

Consider that using a WordPress theme is not—in itself—a shortcut for beginners, nor is it a blow dealt to the sacred art of web design. However, it’s not always the ideal solution for building a site.

At this point, then, the question to ask yourself is different: do you prefer a site built from scratch or a site built well, tailor-made for you? Keep this in mind while reading this article. And give us an answer only at the end!

How WordPress templates work

A WordPress template (also called a WordPress theme) is the graphic and functional foundation on which a site is built. There are thousands of them online, if not more.

They are free or premium, and can be designed for blogs but also for professional websites. But—basically—they serve the exact same purpose: they set the structure and style in a few clicks, saving us hours and hours of graphic and technical development.

In short, with a WordPress template, we don’t have to write all the code from scratch. And for those commissioning a website, this can only mean one thing: shorter timelines, lower costs, and fewer technical risks.

After all, with a WordPress template, you don’t need to design every section from scratch, because the main features are already fully integrated. For those commissioning a site, this translates into a smaller investment as well as shorter delivery times, without compromising the quality of the final result.

The template is therefore a perfect foundation —already tested and functional—for any site. However, not all WordPress themes are lightweight and optimized.

In fact, being designed to cover many use cases, they tend to include superfluous modules and functions that, in some contexts, end up weighing down the website and slowing its performance.

And this is just one of the limitations to keep in mind when choosing to start from a predefined theme.

Beyond the advantages, consider the limitations too

As we’ve said, up to a certain point with WordPress templates, everything is perfect. You work quickly, with lower costs and a ready-made foundation.

And yet…

A WordPress theme is born to adapt to everyone—meaning for all types of websites. And when something is designed for everyone, it’s rarely perfect for anyone in particular.

Want a practical example? Here: inside a template, you always find more than necessary. Modules, sections, functions, all designed for multiple realities—from agencies to restaurants, from e-commerce to personal portfolios.

And this flexibility, which may seem like an advantage at first, often turns out to be a significant burden that then affects the overall performance of your website.

There’s also the customization aspect that shouldn’t be underestimated. A predefined template imposes structural limits: colors, layouts, spacing, and components that don’t always adapt to the brand identity or the communication needs of the company. You can certainly modify them, in part; but beyond a certain point, customization becomes complicated (and expensive), which effectively cancels out the initial savings.

And then, you also have to consider the quality of the template, or rather the work done by the theme developer: how attentive were they to ease of use? And to performance? And to SEO optimization?

In short, a WordPress template is fine if you treat it as a starting point. In all other cases, it can be limiting. Unless you need a personal blog (or even a small showcase site) without too many ambitions. In that case, things are different.

A WordPress template can come in handy

The truth is that predefined WordPress themes (from free ones to professional templates) can be an excellent point of reference, especially in the early stages of a project.

Often, it’s the templates themselves that allow us to understand—as an agency, of course—what the client likes, what kind of layout they have in mind, etc.

Take, for example, the famous ThemeForest. ThemeForest is an online archive of pre-packaged templates that offers the client many ideas to understand what they need. Often, those who come to No Digital Brain already have a clear idea that they developed by looking at a predefined WordPress template.

And that’s perfectly fine. Starting from the template, we can build a lighter version suited to their reality.

What is the No Digital Brain approach?

At No Digital Brain, we will never install a pre-packaged WordPress theme—unless you explicitly ask us to.

When a client shows us a template that inspires them, we analyze it together. We understand what struck them, which elements they want to keep and which, instead, aren’t really needed. From there, we recreate everything from scratch using, depending on the case, themes developed via code or a page builder.

The goal is to maintain the initial visual logic, while making the structure lighter, the performance more solid, and every detail consistent with the client’s identity.

A custom design is the best choice

At the end of the day, this is what matters. A custom-made website is always the best choice. Because a site—but you probably already know this—is an extension of your corporate identity. And it must be yours in every component.

And if you already have a site but it no longer represents you, you don’t need to start from scratch. With a website restyling, you can reorganize your online space and improve its performance.

At No Digital Brain, we do exactly that.
