How do you choose a website platform?

How to choose the best website platform for your project? Complete guide to CMSs, with practical advice on goals, budget, security, and support.

What you'll find in this article

Choosing a website platform always seems like an almost obvious step. And in fact, too little time is devoted to it. We talked about this a while ago on our blog. In that article (“WordPress or Blogger, an honest guide to choosing“) we focused on two very well-known platforms—namely WordPress and Blogger, a true reference point for those launching into the digital world for the first time. This time, however, we want to take a broader approach. We’ll therefore talk about CMSs, or Content Management Systems, which are an extremely important asset and deserve careful consideration before making an investment. But we’ll also talk about budget, goals, support… In short: you’re looking at a comprehensive guide that will undoubtedly lead you to the best choice.

First of all: what is a website platform?

A website platform is, in simple terms, the system that allows you to build, manage, and update everything you see online. So: pages, articles, images, forms, menus, products… anything! In fact, it’s a digital infrastructure, invisible to the public (i.e., to users) but whose role is essential. Because it holds the site together and makes it work without you having to touch the code—unless you want to. The most appropriate term in this case is Content Management System, which is almost always abbreviated to the acronym CMS. The content management system does—therefore—exactly what it promises in the name: it helps you manage content (from pages to articles) and is designed to simplify your life while, at the same time, giving the site a solid structure—both from a technical and organizational standpoint. Every website platform is designed with a different approach. And while it’s true that they’re somewhat similar to each other, not all of them suit the needs of every project. That’s why this isn’t a trivial choice. Because the platform is, ultimately, what determines whether your digital project can be managed independently and—perhaps, why not?—grow alongside your business.

Choosing the right CMS platform is crucial

Let’s take an example to understand better. If you have a small local business and need a simple site (with a few pages, a blog, a contact form) you could even opt for a minimal platform like Wix and similar ones. It’s true, however, that as soon as you need any additional functionality, you’ll find yourself battling technical limitations, non-existent plugins, and unexpected extra costs. The result, very often, is having to start all over again. Choosing a minimal website platform may seem like the best shortcut, but it’s not always the case. On the contrary, if you want to start a small personal blog, choosing a super advanced CMS will force you to pay for (and manage) a complexity you don’t really need. It would be like booking an entire conference room for a meeting between two people. It might work, sure; but isn’t it a bit too excessive? The choice of website platform, therefore, must be in line with your current needs. And perhaps also with future ones, if there’s already some planning behind it. Choosing the platform for your website requires a minimum of strategic clarity. It’s not enough to look at “who uses what”: you need to understand what you really need, how much you want to grow, and which tools will support you without holding you back. Below you’ll find the advice we always give clients when we evaluate the best CMS for their project together.

Our advice for choosing your CMS wisely

At this point you’ll have a clear understanding that choosing a web platform requires strategic thinking. Before investing, you need to understand:
  • what you really need
  • how much you want to grow
  • and which tools are right for you
Below you’ll find the advice we always give clients when we evaluate the best CMS for their project together.
  1. Define your site’s goals clearly

Even before focusing on choosing your web platform, think about why you’re creating the site. Think about your why. Do you just want to present yourself online? Do you need an updatable blog? Do you need an e-commerce site? Or a members area, advanced workflows, or automations? Your goals—believe us—define everything, they make all the difference. Once you’ve set your goals, it will be easier to identify an appropriate structure, the necessary features, and so on. A small blog like an online diary requires one approach; a digital project designed to monetize requires a completely different one. The more precise you are in defining your medium- to long-term goals, the easier it will be to establish priorities, requirements, and therefore—also—the best website platform for you. That is, one that won’t feel too tight after just six months.

Calculate the budget (including maintenance!)

Keep in mind that the initial cost of the site is only part of the investment. Because every CMS involves additional expenses. Expenses for themes, plugins, etc. And then there’s maintenance, which should be considered from the start. Many choose an inexpensive (or perhaps free) platform to save money initially, only to discover that—for every small necessary modification—they need to activate a premium subscription that costs a lot. That’s why costs need to be considered upfront. When evaluating a CMS, always consider the overall budget: not just what you spend today, but what it will cost you to keep it secure, fast, and functional over time. A sustainable site is one you can afford even a year from now.

Don’t underestimate security systems

The security of a website is not a technical detail, and it shouldn’t be taken lightly. When you launch a site, your priority should be to keep data safe, transactions if it’s an e-commerce site and—therefore, in a sense—also your reputation. Every CMS platform handles security differently. Some have constant updates, others require manual interventions; some offer certified plugins, others rely on poorly controlled third-party extensions. It’s true that basically the most well-known CMSs comply with currently applicable security standards. The fact remains that if the website platform is not very secure, you risk exposing yourself to malware, spam, attacks, or data loss. So—when choosing—always verify the system’s robustness, the frequency of updates, and the quality of available tools. A secure site is a reliable site.

Make sure it’s easy to get support

No platform is perfect and, sooner or later, you’ll need help. Maybe after an update, or for a bug, or because of an integration you can’t manage on your own. That’s why support matters more than it seems. A CMS with an active community, as well as clear documentation and easily available professionals, will save you a lot of time and stress. Take WordPress: it can sometimes be complicated, but that’s precisely why we at No Digital Brain offer a dedicated WordPress support service. Solutions like this shouldn’t be underestimated. If you end up choosing a less widespread platform, for example, every problem will be harder to manage. So before investing, find out:
  • is there official support?
  • are there available developers?
  • who can you turn to in case of problems?
The ideal is to never find yourself alone facing a technical issue. For us at No Digital Brain, at least, this is an absolute priority.
